What is the Lagos Life game?

Lagos Life is a free online life-simulation game — think of a playful, community-driven take on The Sims, rebuilt around one of the most energetic cities on Earth. It was made by Nigerian developer Shalom Rayhamen under his studio Eliy, and it launched on 1 October 2026, Nigeria's Independence Day. Within about four days it had crossed a million players, driven largely by word of mouth on X (formerly Twitter).

You play as a single resident of a stylised Lagos. You sign up, settle into one of the city's homes, and start building a life: finding work, earning in-game naira, upgrading your place, getting around town and — crucially — meeting other players, who are all live in the same city at the same time. It is multiplayer in a way The Sims never was: the people on the beach with you are real people.

The city itself is the love letter. The map is packed with real Lagos landmarks given the game treatment: the Afrika Shrine, Amala Shitta, Quilox, Freedom Park, the Lekki-ish canopy walk, UNILAG, Eko Hotels, a certain famous traffic on the danfo route. Even the power cuts ("survive NEPA") are part of the joke. If you have ever lived in, loved or merely wondered about Lagos, the game is a warm, funny mirror of it.

The game also has a light civic-simulation layer that its players obsess over: each week the community elects a Governor (a real player) who passes laws affecting everyone — during our research week, a transport subsidy was in effect. There is a jail system for misbehaving residents, billboards around the city that players can rent, and "Sea Plots" along the waterfront. It is an active, evolving world with updates landing weekly.

Why players are hooked

  • It is instant. No download, no launcher, no install — the whole game loads in a browser tab, on a laptop or a phone. That is a big reason it exploded in Nigeria, where most gaming happens on phones.
  • It is genuinely social. Chat, parties, churches and mosques, match-day viewing centres — the map is designed to put players in the same room. Thousands are online at any given moment per the official stats page.
  • The setting is the star. Most life-sims are set in invented suburbs. This one smells like suya and diesel, in the best way. Representation is the hook that media coverage keeps circling back to.
  • It keeps changing. The developer ships updates and takes feedback publicly on X — new jobs, house upgrades, jail time — so the city feels alive rather than finished.
  • It is free. You can play the entire game without paying anything. Optional top-ups exist, and the in-game economy is strictly play-money (more on that in our safety guide).

How to start playing in two minutes

You do not need our permission to skip ahead — the whole Lagos Life game lives on the official site, and we keep a dedicated play page — one tap opens the official game in its own tab, with play-along checklists and guides staying beside it. But if you like a plan:

  1. Open the game. Use our Play page or the official site directly. It runs in any modern browser.
  2. Create your account. Pick a username and password — that is all that is required. Email is optional but recommended for password resets.
  3. Follow the first-day plan. Our beginner guide gives you a calm four-step checklist for your first session: settle in, earn, explore, socialise.

That is genuinely all there is to it. There is no download (and no official APK either — beware of fakes), and there is nothing to configure. If something goes wrong — a blocked window, a login that will not stick — the how-to-play page has the fixes.

A taste of the city

The official map currently lists 30 open locations, from the obvious (Beach, Market, Office) to the lovingly specific (Amala Shitta, Mama Bisi's Salon, the Polling Unit where elections happen). Our map & locations hub explains every one of them and groups them by what you actually want to do:
